Chapter 15

Nick stayed still in his seat in his grandfather’s large meeting room and calmly accepted the shit coming his way.

“You have no idea what I do!” Bun yelled it, rising up out of his chair as he spoke, towering over the table and supposedly over Nick sitting at the other end.

Nick reminded himself this was temporary, very temporary, and like everyone else in the room, he stayed calmly put.

He didn’t rise to the bait. He didn’t respond, though it was far too hard to keep the words from streaming through his head. The problem, old man, isn’t that I don’t know what you do, it’s that you don’t even know what you do.

“You can’t run this organization!” Spittle, just a small amount, flew from the man’s lips. Whether this was from anger or age, Nick wasn’t certain, but it wasn’t a mark of pride for the old man. Being quick to anger and thorough in revenge had always been hallmarks of Bun’s style. It had served him and the Vasilescus well for a long time. But now, changes came faster, and ironically, slower responses were called for. Nick also found it far too generous to call what the Vasilescus had left an organization. He literally bit his tongue to keep that one in.

“I don’t even know why you’re here.” That one came through gruff, confused, and accompanied by a head shake as the rage drained out of the older man. While he settled himself back into his seat to wait for Nick to say something, anything, Nick realized that was the heart of the problem all along, wasn’t it?

Bun didn’t know why Nick was here. Didn’t see a purpose even for his grandson’s existence. In the end, it would be Nick who saved the Vasilescu name, even though he himself did not bear it.

Nick, on the other hand, knew exactly why he was here. His birth might not have been preordained, but it should have been. He wasn’t suffering delusions of grandeur, just reaping some, any, benefits from his mother’s gullibility. Her poor decision making led to a child that bore the genes of two great families. It was the only way that birth would have happened; the Kurev family would never have knowingly bred their own line with their enemy.

While Nick should never have been heir, at least not by Bun’s estimation, it was the old man’s policies and leadership that led to Nick sitting right where he was. Leadership born of arrogance led to Nick’s uncles’ early demises. The irony of it all twisted in his gut.

The not quite cold but decidedly unwarm reception he’d gotten from Kaspar Kurev had been the final piece to push this showdown. So far, this meeting at least was going as Nick had intended—Bun was operating at irritated and angry, Nick was calmly sitting in his chair, still having said only that he wanted to run the Vasilescu holdings.

Making sure that his actions were those befitting a leader, he leaned back a little farther and calmly repeated his opening gambit.
